Honey Bee Supplies - What You Need To Know Before You Buy ANYTHING
When it comes to buying honey bee supplies, you can’t just go to Walmart and get the things you need. This is a pretty specialized industry, with very specialized equipment. But the internet has made getting your supplies much easier. In fact, you can order just about anything you need for your beekeeping enterprise online.
But, before you get out your wallet and buy any beekeeping supplies, you need to get an education in beekeeping. This doesn’t have to be super expensive, but you should buy a book or take a course on basic beekeeping.
There is a lot of detail to learn about, and this will help you determine what size of operation you want to run, and whether or not you want to engage in beekeeping as a hobby or as a business.
You will also learn about how to care for the bees. Some of the more important things that you need to learn is how to harvest the honey (and how much to harvest), where to place your hives, and what to do if you lose your all important queen. Two of the best books on the market today for learning beekeeping are ‘Beekeeping for Beginners’ and ‘Beekeeping for Dummies’.
No matter what size of operation you run, you will ultimately need three things for sure.
-Bee hives -either ones you build or ones you buy.
-Protective clothing - to protect from stings.
-Smoker or Liquid Smoke - to calm the bees when handling the hive.
There are plenty of other things that you can buy as well, but these will get you started.
If you are a new beekeeper, start small. Beekeeping equipment can get pricey. Buy only what you need until you are sure that you like it. You can always expand out your activities from there to include more hives later.
Beekeeping is an important hobby and profession. Make sure you get started right.
